Mitzvah Recap: Landon D.

The Plans

Landon proudly became a bar mitzvah at The Temple on a Shabbat morning in front of nearly 200 family members and friends. Then, he and his guests went straight into an afternoon celebration at Opera. The kids traveled in style in the Fur Bus, which really added to the fun!

Mom Karen wanted an afternoon celebration to keep the flow of the day going, and maximize time spent especially with out-of-towners. With a passion for SEC football, and notably the UGA Bulldogs, the theme came naturally. Welcome to Landon’s football fest!

Celebration Details

While initially the family had in mind a different type of venue for the sports-themed bash, Atlanta Event Center at Opera’s event team worked seamlessly with Palate Design to create the ideal atmosphere for the celebration. A simple effect, up lighting, helped transform the venue and the layout of event space turned out to be ideal. “It’s such a perfect venue for a kids’ party! The lights, room footprint and in-house team exceeded our expectations,” said Karen. Landon’s logo looked like the SEC’s, and it was applied to various creative touches around the room like goalpost-style centerpieces.

Note from Shelly: Don’t eliminate any venue just because you think it doesn’t match your theme. Event spaces are designed to be transformed by your décor!

John and the team from Jammin’ DJs wowed Landon and his family. “They made him feel like an absolute rock star and when meeting before the big day, made Landon even more excited about his celebration,” said Karen. “At our party, they knocked it out of the park!” Karen note that the entire DJ team was professional and friendly, and worked hard to make it a personal experience. From the grand entrance to the snowball dance to the hora, the kids didn’t leave the dance floor. John had the kids participate in a Fortnite dance contest, with entertaining results. “We liked their packages and offerings so much, and it was easy to customize, adding on something else we wanted like the photo booth,” said Karen. This was a big hit with guests, as adults and kids posed for pictures with different props throughout the afternoon.

Opera’s in-house catering team designed a menu of kid and adult pleasing favorites, including beef, BBQ and fried green tomato sliders, sweet potato fries, macaroni and cheese, and tater tots. The presentation was creative, with bowls of popular sport snacks, like chips, featured in centerpiece designs. Dessert included custom-made blue cake pops.

In keeping with the theme, guests took home mini-footballs with Landon’s logo printed on them. Photographer Heather Dettore captured the weekend events in beautiful images. Her partner shot details of the party room and décor while Heather concentrated on the family and guests. “Personality in a photographer is important,” Karen noted. “When you feel at ease with someone like Heather, you’ll get better images because everyone is relaxed and happy in portraits. And, the candids were amazing!”

At the end of the party, Landon happily told his parents, “Y’all nailed it.” Karen’s favorite memory was seeing him smiling the whole time, from the hora to dancing with his friends. “He said it was the best party he’d every been to,” she said.

The family’s out of town guests stayed at the Loews Hotel. Sunday brunch was catered by Waffle House, which everyone loved for both the food and the authentic Atlanta flavor.

How did Atlanta Mitzvah Connection Help?

“My husband Steve, Landon, and I went to the EXPO more than once and got our DJ and venue there along with a ton of interesting ideas just from walking around the booths,” said Karen. “I also used the website a lot. The tools and articles really helped with planning. And the recaps are great for seeing what others are doing that you may want to do also!”

 Advice to Other Parents

Karen recommends booking vendors as soon as you are sure you want them, so that you cross them off your list and lock them in. And remember, it’s about your teen and not about the adults, so do what is going to make him or her happy first and foremost!
