Mitzvah Family Spotlight – Kirk and Liv

Siblings Kirk and Liv held their b’nai mitzvah service together in Israel, reading from the Torah while surrounded by family. To commemorate their once-in-a-lifetime experience, parents Lina and Gene planned a once-in-a-lifetime celebration! More than 330 relatives and friends came to the Atlanta Event Center at Opera for a dazzling night club-themed party with multiple entertainers, activities for those who dance and those who don’t, and a wide array of the siblings’ favorite foods.

The Plans

Mom Lina had one goal: to create an out-of-the-box, spectacular experience for Kirk and Liv, and all their guests. “We wanted a celebration that would be fun for everyone, the kids and the adults.” They chose Opera because of the unique design and decor of the venue itself, the variety of spaces that guests could enjoy, and their in-house handling of all the party elements, from catering to entertainment.

At an outdoor cocktail hour, guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and drinks, socializing and gaming at three staffed casino tables.

Adults found their table placements on a large engraved mirror and teens headed to several lounge areas once inside the nightclub. A high-energy dance party included entertainment at every turn: guests could have their futures predicted with a fortune teller, get airbrushed tattoos by Air Illustrations, create Dance Heads green screen videos by and photobooth pictures by Be a Star Entertainment, and continue placing bets at the casino games.

“The adults loved the entertainment as much as the kids,” said Lina.

The kids’ buffet featured chicken tender shots with ranch dressing, mini sliders, mini pizzas, a pasta bar and tater tots. Adults were served salads, and then visited a carving station with steak, chicken and vegetables, an artisan pasta station, and an interactive sushi station. Desserts included a hot doughnut sundae bar with toppings, chocolate-covered strawberries, designer cake pops and a candy buffet with sweet and sour selections.

Onstage, Aerialist DJ Mami Chula got everyone on dancing to pop and hip-hop tracks, while aerialists performed with her on silks suspended from the ceiling. Fire artists also lit up the stage with a performance, and teens were invited onstage with the MC to show their moves and win prizes.

The teens screened three montages during the party: one with pictures of Kirk and Liv through the years, one of their trip to Israel and b’nai mitzvah service, and one celebrating their love for their younger brother, created by Blue Orchid Productions. Kirk and Liv led a brief Havdalah service and candle lighting ceremony that honored special family members and friends. A highlight of the night was a confetti cannon blast that rained down on the party and a spirited hora during which the siblings were lifted in chairs together.

Late in the evening, Bean in the Borough coffee cart made custom hot drinks with the kids’ logo dusted in cocoa on top of each beverage.

Lina noted that the family’s only regret was that the celebration didn’t last longer. “Four hours didn’t seem like enough time – I wish it had gone on much longer!”

How did Atlanta Mitzvah Connection help?

Lina researched vendors on the website, including the Atlanta Event Center at Opera. “They couldn’t have handled things better,” Lina noted. “The team at Opera had great respect for our traditions and brought our vision to life completely while helping us maximize our budget.”

Advice to Other Parents

“Hire a day of planner!” said Lina. “I hardly got to enjoy all the elements of the party because I was checking up on everything.” Also, the family saved money by offering an open bar, but with limited types of drinks. She also noted that planning should start early because things take much longer than you might expect.
