Mitzvah Family Highlights Recap: Sophie H.

The rooms where it happened. An inspired bat mitzvah brought Broadway to Atlanta.

Friends and family who joined Sophie for her bat mitzvah were truly in the “room where it happened”: Congregation Gesher L’Torah for her Torah service and Kiddush, and Roswell Historic Cottage for an evening celebration.

The Plans

Sophie is a huge musical theatre fan and performs in shows locally, so her Broadway-themed celebration suited her perfectly. Her unique Hamilton-themed logo was used throughout the party space, including on printed beverage napkins by Paper Matters.

Celebration Details

Following the morning service, Sophie’s family hosted a Kiddush luncheon at the synagogue with catering by For All Occasions and More. Elegant balloon decorations were done by Balloons Over Atlanta.

In the evening, décor partner Let’s Celebrate blew guests away with a glam-girl Broadway vibe in the party space that could be seen from centerpieces to the “cast list” board, where adults found their seats for the evening. “The decorations were amazing, and every detail, like her gift box, were completely themed,” said mom Lilli.

DJ Mello with Atlanta Fever got the party started, and kept the energy high. “He and his dancers were spectacular,” Lilli said. “Guests hardly left the dance floor!” In fact, Lilli noted, she has no guest table pictures, because they were up and enjoying the music all night. The entrance songs and special songs used, like for a father-daughter dance, were all Broadway tunes. And Mello made sure to include songs that are special to Camp Barney, where Sophie spends each summer. Before Sophie’s celebration, her younger brother was not interested in a dance party for his bar mitzvah celebration, but after seeing Mello and crew in action, they’re now on his must-have list.

Spotlight Productions created the creative Broadway-themed montage that began with clips that showed Sophie “attending” the Tony Awards. Memories in a Moment brought many different backgrounds, including some Broadway-themed ones, for fun party pictures in front of the green screen.

Zest Atlanta Catering developed a menu that excited both adult and teen guests. Many were thrilled by the presentation of hors d’oeuvres like passed mini chicken fajitas with margaritas served in personal Patron Tequila bottles. The teens also enjoyed passed nibbles before the meal, like beef pigs in a blanket and chicken and waffles. For the main course, guests could choose between multiple stations like Tailgate, where beef and brisket sliders and brats were served, or Asian, for tastes like sesame chicken and Thai salad. The teen buffet included chicken fingers with dipping sauces, beef sliders and individual pizzas. Miniature desserts served in cup form included pies, s’mores, cupcakes and banana split bites, along with brownie cake pops and fruit skewers with yogurt sauce. “We never tasted better party food,” Lilli said.

Marci Miller served as day-of planner and helped the family keep the timeline on track and handled any concerns with vendors. As party favors, guests took home t-shirts and ear buds with Sophie’s logo on them. The evening was captured in pictures by Joseph Aczel.

For Sophie, the highlight of the weekend was having everyone she loved in the same place at the same time, at a party that didn’t stop. Her parents enjoyed every moment of the weekend, from the morning service to seeing their daughter the happiest she has ever been.

How did Atlanta Mitzvah Connection help?

“I went to several of the Bar & Bat Mitzvah Expos and consulted the website constantly,” Lilli said. “We got most of our vendors from Atlanta Mitzvah Connection. And we used the discounts, of course! And I LOVED using the tips and ideas section of the website.” The family also used the AMC template insert card language for non-Jews invited to the bat mitzvah.

Advice to Other Parents

Lilli advises: “Use Atlanta Mitzvah Connection for the expos, the tips and the discounts. If you are doing it at a venue that requires bringing everything in, have a day-of planner. It’s the best money ever spent!  I didn’t have a care in the world the night of my party…just had the time of my life!”
