When meeting with Abby’s family to talk about celebration plans, event planner Marci Miller of The Perfect Day! Event Planning hit on an original idea. Why not transform the social hall of The Temple into one of Abby’s favorite spots to spend time, The Atlanta BeltLine? Using it as a theme provided many creative ways for Abby to show her bat mitzvah guests the unique character of her hometown.
With a signature logo designed by Mitzvah Memos, they were off and running. On the big day, nearly 200 guests joined Abby for her service in the sanctuary of The Temple, followed by a Kiddush luncheon catered by Yum! In the evening, family and friends returned to find the synagogue’s social hall transformed into The BeltLine, featuring outdoor elements and recognizable places and spaces, with a twist.
Photos of Abby at Ponce City Market (PCM) became giant banners welcoming guests to the party. Trees, fake grass and bike racks stocked with bikes gave outdoor flair to the space, while projected logos and images brought the walls to life. Signage representing City Winery, renamed for the Mitzvah family, designated the bar area.
Guests found their tables, named for neighborhoods surrounding The BeltLine, with centerpieces from the iconic BeltLine Lantern Parade. When the family attended the parade, mom Stacy asked participants with outstanding lantern designs if they could be borrowed for the bat mitzvah party. Happily, they said yes!
A graffiti wall, like those found in the Old Fourth Ward, became the backdrop of the teen lounge. Young guests could play PCM-themed carnival games and StarLab Productions created custom PCM backgrounds for animated photo posing.“Marci’s design was amazing,” said Stacy. “She thought of every detail and made the party so special.”
Chef Cary’s Cuisine designed an eclectic station menu with options similar to PCM Food Hall selections, like sushi, lo mein, soft tacos, smoked barbecue brisket and southern fried chicken and biscuits. Teens enjoyed mini sliders, soft tacos and mac and cheese along with ball park pretzels and mustard and veggie sushi.
Guests were delighted by gourmet popsicles served from the King of Pops rainbow cart and a selection of cupcakes by The Cupcake Genie, alongside beautiful sweets by Chef Cary.
DJ Tod Peavey kept the energy going on the dance floor, engaging both kids and adults with the right mix of songs, a snowball dance, and an exciting hora.
To truly bring everyone into The BeltLine experience, Abby led a parade through the party, as she and her friends carried lanterns and marched to music around the tables and dance floor. Stacy shared, “With the lights turned low, it was spectacular looking, and many guests joined the procession!”
Zach Porter of Revelry House photographed the whole weekend, and especially captured the colorful vibe of the celebration. Guests went home with t-shirts bearing Abby’s themed logo, and their fun images from StarLab.
Both Abby and Stacy said they wouldn’t change a thing about the weekend. “Sharing this special moment with family and friends was so memorable, “said Stacy.
How did Atlanta Mitzvah Connection help?
I attended the Expo and met our DJ there. I also got connected with Marci Miller through AMC and she helped secure all my other vendors.
Advice to Other Parents
“Hire a planner. I couldn’t have done it without Marci!” said Stacy.
She also recommends securing your venue right away and getting a good spreadsheet set up to keep track of budget and costs.
